Marine Environment & Conservation
If we want to continue to enjoy the underwater world we all love, we must all do our bit even if it is only signing the odd petition or two. Below are a few causes that need our help:
Your support is needed to convince the Government that marine conservation must be at the core of the Marine Bill. Have your say in how our seas are managed and protected.
Whaling is cruel, unnecessary and unsustainable. Help us to stop this bloody whaling – the time to act is now.
The whaling nations believe that people have stopped caring about whales –
show them this isn’t true. Add your voice and ensure that they get the message
loud and clear – stop bloody whaling!
35 species of migratory sharks and rays are
considered Threatened by the World Conservation Union. The rapid decline
in shark numbers across the world is well documented and the reasons for it, the
burgeoning demand by the increasingly affluent Chinese for shark fins, is also
clear. How to stop that decline is a much harder and many different approaches
to this are taken.
The Shark Trust, based in the UK, has gained enormous respect in
scientific and political circles, taking a stance calling for a sustainable
shark fishery. This pragmatic approach has allowed them to work with both
fishing bodies and governments and they have had considerable influence in
promoting and framing legislation to limit the impact of commercial shark
fishing and to try to put an end to finning, which is where the shark has its
fins cut off while still alive.
Fishermen in Japan kill some 20-thousand dolphins a year. Reports of these dreadful events have shocked the world. The public has responded with an avalanche of protest. We must continue to work on the ground in Japan.
Keeping highly intelligent animals such as dolphins in captivity is extremely
cruel. Many dolphins die in the capture process. The dolphins who are captured
are taken from their families. They are condemned to spend the rest of their
lives in cement tanks, often in unsanitary conditions, forced to perform tricks
for food.
Driven from safety, hunted, tortured, killed, captured, blasted by noise and poisoned by man's carelessness and deliberate cruelty- whales and dolphins face more threats than ever before. We campaign for an end to these threats, including whaling, fisheries bycatch, captivity and environmental impacts such as pollution and climate change. WDCS believes that every whale and dolphin is important and deserving of protection We safeguard their communities, populations and whole species. We support ground breaking scientific research and conservation projects and push for better protection for whales and dolphins by countries around the world.
